Wilmington, Massachusetts Originally settled in 1665, Wilmington, Massachusetts and incorporated in 1930. Wilmington was made up of parts of Woburn, Reading and Billerica Massachusetts. Wilmington is rich in our countries history with many of it's 18th century homes still in existence and Wilmington's minute men fighting in the battle at Bunker Hill in Charlestown MA and Merriams Corner in Concord MA.
As many of the outlying towns, Wilmington's early economic base revolved around agriculture. It is also said the Baldwin apple was discovered at Butter's Farm. The construction of the Middlesex canal made it very easy to move goods from Lowell MA to Boston MA. The 1800's brought the producing of hops to Wilmington which was the center of Massachusetts hops culture. The building of the Boston Lowell Railway in 1852 shut down the Middlesex canal. Near the turn of the 1900's several slaughter houses wer opened and the largest industry became the Perry, Cutler and Company Tannery.
A population explosion occurred after the 1940's with the building of route 128. Today Wilmington is a popular choice among home buyers because of it easy commute to Boston with two different trainlines running through, it's close proximity to Boston, routes 495 and 128, good schools and affordable housing. Transportation: Highways- Easy access to federal highways route 93, 128 and 3 with major state highways running through including routes 38, 129 and 62. Buses- No scheduled routes but Wilmington is part of the MBTA which provides transportation for the handicapped and disabled. Trains- Wilmington has 2 train lines.
